Changing Symbols and Tickers

Efficiently switching between different symbols is a crucial skill for active traders. TradingView offers several methods to change the symbol displayed on your chart, each suited for different workflows.

Method 1: Symbol Search Box

The most straightforward method is clicking the symbol name in the top-left corner of the chart. This opens the symbol search dialog where you can type a new ticker. Your drawings and indicators will remain on the chart — only the underlying data changes.

Method 2: Watchlist Click

If you have a watchlist open in the right sidebar, simply clicking on any symbol in the list will switch your chart to that asset. This is the fastest method for cycling through your favorite instruments.

Method 3: Keyboard Shortcut

Press the "/" key (forward slash) to instantly open the symbol search. Start typing immediately — no mouse click needed. Press Enter to select the top result, or use arrow keys to navigate the list.

Method 4: Compare Feature

Instead of switching symbols, you can overlay multiple symbols on the same chart using the Compare feature (the "+" icon in the top toolbar or the "Compare" option). This lets you see how different assets move relative to each other.

Pro Tip

Create a Watchlist with your most-traded symbols. Then use single-clicks to rapidly flip between charts. This saves enormous time compared to typing symbols repeatedly.

Key Takeaways

  • Use the "/" keyboard shortcut for the fastest symbol changes
