Stochastic, ATR, Ichimoku, VWAP & Pivot Points
Beyond the core indicators, TradingView offers dozens of other powerful tools. Let's cover five more important indicators that many professional traders rely on daily.
Stochastic Oscillator
The Stochastic compares a closing price to its range over a set period. It generates values between 0 and 100, with readings above 80 considered overbought and below 20 oversold. It uses two lines: %K (fast) and %D (slow). Crossovers of these lines generate signals similar to MACD.
ATR (Average True Range)
ATR measures volatility by calculating the average range of price movement over a period. It doesn't indicate direction — only how much price typically moves. Traders use ATR for setting stop-losses (e.g., place stop 2× ATR away from entry) and for position sizing.
Ichimoku Cloud
The Ichimoku Cloud is a comprehensive indicator that shows support/resistance, trend direction, momentum, and trade signals all in one view. It consists of five lines and a shaded "cloud" area. Price above the cloud is bullish; below is bearish. The cloud's thickness represents support/resistance strength.
VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price)
VWAP calculates the average price weighted by volume throughout the trading day. Institutional traders use VWAP as a benchmark — buying below VWAP and selling above it. It resets each trading day and is primarily used for intraday trading.
Pivot Points
Pivot Points calculate support and resistance levels based on the previous period's high, low, and close. They automatically plot a pivot point (PP) with support levels (S1, S2, S3) below and resistance levels (R1, R2, R3) above. Many floor traders and algorithms use these levels.
Pro Tip
Don't try to learn all these indicators at once. Pick 2-3 that complement each other (e.g., a trend indicator + a momentum oscillator + volume) and master those before adding more.
